Sweden — The Public-Market Engine of Nordic Tech

Klarna listed at $19B in September 2025 and the stock fell 65% by year-end. Lovable raised at $6.6B against $400M ARR. Voi is exploring an IPO off real profitability. Stockholm is the only Nordic city with a working public-market conveyor belt, and 2025 stress-tested it.

Sweden is the country most outsiders mean when they say “Nordic startup ecosystem.” The reputation is earned. The picture for 2025 and 2026, though, is messier than the cover-story headline suggests, and the messy parts are where the useful reading is.

The flagship 2025 event was Klarna’s September NYSE listing, the largest US IPO of the year, priced at $40 a share for a roughly $19B market cap. By April 2026 the stock trades near $14, down about 65% from the float. The operating numbers are still substantial: $127.9B FY2025 GMV, $3.5B revenue, the company’s first-ever billion-dollar quarter in Q4 2025. What spooked the market was a $26M Q4 swing into loss as loan-loss provisions surged, weaker forward guidance, and four senior executive departures since January 2026. CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski stated publicly that AI will compress headcount from ~3,000 to ~2,000 by 2030, an unusually direct comment for a CEO right after IPO. A detail most coverage misses: Klarna’s parent is now Klarna Group plc, a UK plc, after a corporate redomicile completed for the listing. The legal centre of gravity moved away from Stockholm even though the operating teams did not.

The other half of the 2025 Stockholm story is Lovable’s rise. The AI-native app-builder reportedly hit $400M ARR by late 2025, raised a $6.6B Series B in December, and became Europe’s fastest growing AI company by reported revenue trajectory. Headcount disclosures range from 146 to 871 depending on the source, which itself says something about how fast the team has been hiring. Lovable is Stockholm’s bet that it can produce category-defining AI tooling; the city’s reputation until now rested on consumer fintech.

Outside the headlines, Sweden’s depth is the more interesting story. Voi closed FY2025 at €178M revenue (+34%) with a 57.5% vehicle-level margin and is exploring an IPO — a profitable micromobility operator was not on most analysts’ 2026 bingo cards. Spotify anchors the public-market reference set as the only European tech company at sustained $20B+ market cap. Syre is the most credible H&M-backed climatetech spinout, with a $100M TPG-led Series A and a $600M offtake agreement that effectively pre-sells output. QA.tech is the Stockholm AI-test-automation startup competing with $50M-funded US incumbents on a tenth of the capital. The gaming bench remains globally relevant, and the fintech bench is the deepest in Europe outside London.

Vinnova, the national innovation agency, runs an unusually open grant programme that European founders mention as some of the easier non-dilutive money on the continent. KTH (Stockholm) and Chalmers (Gothenburg) supply the engineering pipeline; the design and product talent comes out of Hyper Island and the wider Stockholm consultancy diaspora. Senior engineering compensation converged with London and Berlin in 2025, so Sweden’s old “cheap engineering” advantage is mostly gone. What replaced it is a deeper, more specialised talent pool.

The capital base is what genuinely separates Stockholm from its peers. The city has working bookrunners, late-stage growth funds (EQT, Kinnevik, Northzone), and a public market that prices SaaS coherently. Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo and Reykjavik have nothing at the same density. That plumbing is durable, and it explains why Series B+ companies across the Nordics increasingly relocate at least their cap tables to Stockholm even when their operating teams stay home.

The 2026 question is whether Klarna’s post-IPO discipline, Lovable’s growth trajectory and Voi’s profitability story all hold at once, because the rest of the Nordic ecosystem is using Stockholm’s public-market signal as the reference price for late-stage venture rounds across the region. Cross-reference the directory’s Sweden listings and Stockholm cluster for the full bench.
