Denmark vs Iceland — Density of Operators vs One Half-Billion-Dollar Anchor

Denmark has dozens of mid-scale SaaS and healthtech businesses. Iceland has Alvotech doing $593M revenue from one Reykjavik building, and a much smaller bench behind it.

This is the most population-asymmetric comparison in the directory. Denmark sits at roughly 5.9M, Iceland at 380,000. The companies-per-capita ratios are closer than the absolute counts suggest, but the scale-of-output story is different.

Denmark’s strength is breadth. The directory lists Pleo, Corti, Tiimo, Templafy, Just Eat, plus the long tail of Copenhagen B2B SaaS that never makes Sifted’s headlines but adds up to a real ecosystem. The flagship businesses are mid-scale, capital-efficient, and spread across SaaS, healthtech and consumer.

Iceland’s strength is concentration. Alvotech alone reported $593M revenue in 2025, bigger than every Danish healthtech in the directory combined. Kerecis sold to Coloplast in 2023 for $1.3B, the largest-ever Icelandic exit. Sidekick Health is the digital therapeutics counterpart. There is also a geothermal-powered HPC story that gets little attention: Iceland sells abundant clean compute to AI workloads in ways Denmark cannot match physically.

The less obvious point is that Iceland carries a higher per-capita biotech operating-leverage concentration than any Nordic country, and the Reykjavik corridor’s productivity per square metre has few parallels anywhere. The flip side is single-site exposure. Alvotech’s 2025 four-Complete-Response-Letter cascade from one FDA inspection shows what a one-flagship economy looks like under stress. Denmark is more boring and considerably more diversified.

Company stage should drive the choice of base. Mid-stage B2B SaaS fits Copenhagen. A specialised biotech with heavy compute requirements has a real case for Reykjavik, even before the geothermal cost story enters the maths. The Denmark and Iceland directories carry the full splits.
